Privacy policy
Last updated: 11 October 2026
Cranslate writes down what people near you say and translates it, on your phone. It is made by Dmitry Samoylenko, an individual developer (contact: trdmitriisamoilenko@gmail.com). This policy covers the Cranslate apps for iPhone, Apple Watch, Android phones and Wear OS watches.
In short: Cranslate collects no personal data. Speech recognition and translation run on your phone. Nothing you say or hear, and nothing the app writes down, is sent to the developer or to anyone else. There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking.
What happens to the audio
- Cranslate listens only during a session. You start a session with a tap on the microphone, on the phone or on the watch, and stop it with another tap. A session also stops by itself after a silence you choose in Settings.
- The audio is processed in the phone's memory by two models on the phone: one writes down the speech, the other translates it. The audio is not sent over the internet.
- With a watch, the watch records the audio and sends it to the Cranslate app on your phone, and the phone sends the lines back to the watch. This uses the connection your phone already has with the watch: Google Play services on a Wear OS watch, WatchConnectivity on an Apple Watch. It does not go through any server of the developer.
- "Save sessions" keeps the audio of each session as a file on the phone. It is off until you turn it on.
What stays on your phone
- History: the lines of each session (what was said, the translation, the time and the languages). You can turn History off and delete it in Settings.
- Saved audio, only if you turn it on. You can delete it in Settings.
- Settings: your languages, theme and watch options.
- The models: two files of about 2.5 GB in all.
All of it is in the app's private storage. Other apps cannot read it, and removing the app removes all of it. On Android none of it is part of device backups. On an iPhone the models are kept out of backups, and History and settings are part of your iPhone's own backup, as for other apps.
The internet
Cranslate uses the internet only to download its two models, when you tap "Download" during setup or in Settings. The files come from the developer's public GitHub repository, github.com/samoylenkodmitry/cranslate-models. GitHub, Inc. receives the request as for any download: the IP address of your phone and standard request data. GitHub's privacy statement applies to it. Cranslate sends no information about you or your use of the app with the request.
Permissions
- Microphone: to hear speech during a session. On a watch, to record what the watch hears during a session.
- Notifications (Android): to show the progress of the model download, and that Cranslate is ready for your watch.
- Foreground service of the microphone type (Android): with "Ready for your watch" turned on in Settings, Cranslate keeps the notification "Ready to listen", so the phone may open its microphone when you start a session on the watch. The app does not record until a session starts.
- Foreground service of the data sync type (Android): to finish the model download you started when the app is not on screen, with its progress in a notification.
- Internet and network state: to download the models and to tell you before a large download on a metered connection.
- Vibration: to tap when a new line arrives and after a long silence. Settings can turn it off.
Children
Cranslate is not directed at children under 13, and it collects no data from anyone.
Your rights
Cranslate holds no personal data on any server, so there is nothing to access, correct or delete outside your phone. Everything the app keeps is on your phone and under your control in Settings.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date at the top.
